Acupuncture and Reproductive Health

Boost Fertility and Conception

Acupuncture has a long and successful history in reproductive medicine. It is an important element in the Zita West approach to reproductive planning and problem-solving, for both men and women.

It can be used to help boost female fertility, to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy and to treat underlying conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Endometriosis and irregular cycles.

It's also good for relieving stress and for redressing hormonal imbalance, (both of which are frequent contributors to fertility problems) as well as for boosting the flow of blood to the reproductive organs. It can help with male fertility too.

Improve chances of IVF success

Acupuncture can also be a valuable complement to IVF, for both men and women, helping to substantially improve the chances of success.

Having acupuncture pre and post embryo transfer can be particularly useful. A recent meta-analysis, published by the British Medical Journal in February 2008, suggests that women undergoing IVF, who also have acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer, have a much higher chance of conceiving that those who don't.

This is supported by the most recent audit of Zita West clients, almost 60% of whom became pregnant after having acupuncture at the Clinic before and after embryo transfer.

Enhance pregnancy

Acupuncture can be especially helpful during pregnancy as well.

At the Zita West Clinic we usually recommend that mothers-to-be consider having it every 4 to 6 weeks.

It can be used to help simulate the flow of blood to the uterus and to help lift your energy levels. It's great for relieving stress too - stress isn't good for mother or baby - and for relieving some of the more common ailments of pregnancy like nausea, fatigue or back-ache.

It's often used in the last few weeks of pregnancy as well, helping prepare you for birth.

It can be used to help induce labour, or to turn breech babies, and to help with pain relief during labour.

Zita usually encourages her clients to have acupuncture on a weekly basis from 36 weeks onwards.

Support post-natal recovery

And, of course, acupuncture can be used to help new mothers too. The early weeks and months following the birth can be very demanding, both physically and emotionally.
